Abstract

The prevalence of thrush in the general population is 20%. Thrush is an oral disease caused by an infection by the fungus Candida albicans. Leaf of bidara (Ziziphus mauritiana L.) is a plant that used to prevent and help treat thrush because it has compounds such as phenols which is antifungal in nature. This study aims to formulate the bidara leaf extract into a mouthwash with various concentrations of F1, F2, and F3 of 3%, 5%, and 7%, respectively. Then evaluated the physical properties of the preparation and the antifungal activity against Candida albicans fungi. The results of evaluating the physical properties of the mouthwash showed that the three formulas which liquid are clear brown to dark brown, slightly sweet taste and distinctive flavour of menthol, the average pH was F1 (5,22), F2 (5,25), F3 (5, 27), mean viscosity F1 (1,198 cP), F2 (1,070 cP), F3 (1,030 cP), average density F1 (1,0153 g /mL), F2 (1,0240 g /mL), F3 (1,0243 g /mL). The antifungal activity test used the agar diffusion method. The results showed that the average inhibition zone for Candida albicans fungi in each treatment was 9.86 mm for positive control, 0.00 mm for the negative control, 0.00 mm for solvent control. F1 5.42 mm, F2 13.26 mm, and F3 6.91 mm. The results of the analysis using Kruskal-Wallis because the prerequisite test data were not homogeneously distributed so that using the non-parametric test, the Asymp.sig result was 0.008 (0.008 <0.05), it can be concluded that there was a significant difference between the inhibition zone diameters in the treatment group.
